The Piton de Sucre monolith, situated at the end of the Cirque of Cilaos, is evidence of the ancient volcanic activity of the Piton des Neiges. Violent erosion has taken place, with the Bras Rouge, the main river of the cirque, carving out deep and narrow gorges over time, resulting in cliffs more than 100 metres high.
This hike takes us to the foot of the Piton de Sucre and lets us walk along this fissure to an impressive waterfall.
We then return along the path leading to Ilet à Cordes, formerly taken by the inhabitants to reach Cilaos. A glimpse of this “end of the world” îlet, before heading back to Cilaos with the small local bus. Spectacular views on the way.
